Questions to Ask Your Dentist Before Any Treatment

September 27, 2026

Whether it’s a filling, a crown, or something bigger, a few direct questions before agreeing to treatment can save confusion and unexpected cost later.

About the Diagnosis

What exactly is wrong, and can I see it on the X-ray or scan? A dentist willing to show and explain the actual problem, not just state a conclusion, is a good sign.

About Alternatives

Is this the only option, or are there alternatives with different cost/durability tradeoffs? Most dental problems have more than one valid treatment path.

About Cost and Timeline

What’s the total cost, including any follow-up visits? How many appointments will this take, and what happens if something doesn’t go as planned?

About Urgency

Does this need to be treated now, or can it reasonably wait? A dentist who distinguishes urgent from optional treatment clearly is being straightforward with you.
