5 Signs You Might Need Braces (And What Happens at Your First Visit)

August 4, 2026

Most people don’t walk into a dental clinic thinking “I need braces.” They come in for something else — a chipped tooth, a routine cleaning, a nagging jaw ache — and the orthodontic issue comes up almost by accident. So how do you know if it’s actually worth getting checked? Here are five signs worth paying attention to, and what we’re really looking for when a patient asks us this exact question.

1. Your teeth are crowded or overlapping

This is the most obvious one, but “crowding” doesn’t always mean visibly crooked teeth. Sometimes it just means your teeth are hard to clean properly because they’re packed too close together. If floss keeps shredding in the same spot every time, that’s often a crowding issue talking.

2. Your bite doesn’t quite meet right

Bite down normally and pay attention. Do your upper front teeth sit way in front of your lower ones? Or the reverse — lower teeth in front of upper? Either one is worth a look. An uneven bite isn’t just cosmetic; it affects how you chew, and over years it can wear down enamel unevenly.

3. You have a gap that’s growing, not shrinking

A small gap between the front teeth is common and not automatically a problem. What we actually watch for is a gap that’s getting wider over time, especially in adults — that can be a sign of gum or bone changes underneath, not just “how your teeth grew.”

4. You catch your cheek or bite your tongue often

If you’re regularly biting the inside of your cheek or your tongue during normal chewing, that’s frequently a sign your teeth aren’t lining up the way they should. It’s easy to brush off as clumsiness, but it’s usually mechanical — the teeth are literally in the way of each other.

If any of the five signs above sound familiar, it doesn’t automatically mean you need braces — but it’s worth 20 minutes to find out for sure rather than wondering about it for another five years.

5. Your jaw clicks, or you get headaches on one side

Not every jaw click needs treatment. But if it’s paired with soreness, one-sided headaches, or your jaw feeling “tired” after a long conversation, it’s worth mentioning at a check-up. Sometimes this traces back to how the teeth meet, sometimes not — but it’s worth ruling out.

So what actually happens at the first visit?

Nothing dramatic, honestly. We take a look, usually an X-ray, talk through what we’re seeing, and — if treatment makes sense — walk through the realistic options: metal braces, ceramic, self-ligating, or clear aligners, along with rough timelines and cost. Nobody walks out with braces on day one. It’s a conversation first.
