What to Expect After Dental Implant Surgery — Recovery Timeline
Knowing what’s normal after implant placement helps you tell the difference between expected healing and something worth calling about.
The First Few Days
Some swelling, mild discomfort, and minor bleeding are normal in the first 24-48 hours. Prescribed pain relief and a cold compress typically manage this well. Stick to soft foods and avoid the surgical site while chewing.
The First Two Weeks
Swelling and discomfort should steadily improve, not worsen, over this period. Gentle brushing (avoiding the implant site directly at first) and following any prescribed rinse routine help prevent infection during initial healing.
The Months That Follow
This is the osseointegration period — the bone gradually fuses around the implant post, typically taking a few months before the final crown can be placed. There’s usually little to feel during this stage; it’s mostly a waiting period with periodic check-ins.
When to Call Your Dentist
Worsening pain or swelling after the first few days, fever, or persistent bleeding beyond what’s expected are signs to contact your dentist rather than waiting it out.
